Men all over the world have been using Viagra for over two decades now. Some statistics reveal that since 1988 (the year this drug was born), as many as 23 million men have used this drug including more than 900,000 in UK alone! While many men don’t see any reason why not to use this product of science, most are found out to be unaware of the possible side effect of using this drug, a reality that has hit a lot of people, and hit them hard too. Yes, we are talking about the possibility of this drug rendering you blind, that too permanently!
What actually happens is that in some cases, usage of Viagra leads to a shortened supply of blood in the optic nerve, causing permanent damage to the nerve. The drug was invented by the drug industry major Pfizer as a temporary cure for erectile dysfunction. However, it is also believed that Viagra was initially tried as a cure of angina. Though it could not help in that, the patients responded with some ‘positive side effects’ of this as a dramatic improvement in their sex life. The only reason why doctors were then not too sure about the harms caused by it was because it caused minor ‘negative side effects’ like indigestion.
It was as late as 2005 that the US Food and Drug Administration announced that it had received complaints from as many as 38 users of Viagra regarding it causing blindness in them. Pfizer was quick to dismiss these reports but the investigation is on. There have been many civil lawsuits filed against Pfizer due to the possible Blindness caused by Viagra. A man in Texas has filed a lawsuit of $75,000 as a compensation stating that the company had failed to inform the consumers of the possible side effects of using this drug.
